Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions shaking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.

Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran

As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.

“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, without immediately offer additional information.

Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events

The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events leading up to this strike involve:

  • American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
  • Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
  • Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
  • Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
